Restaurant and catering service training in English

Interested in the restaurant and catering industry? Seize the opportunity!
Restaurant workers are craftspeople in a creative field. In addition to cooking, experiments require an artistic eye, cleaning and hygiene skills, as well as skills in prefabricating, designing and innovating raw materials. Restaurant worker needs also diverse knowledge. For example, by selecting raw materials, reducing waste and sorting waste, restaurant workers can influence climate-responsible kitchen operations.
The training focuses on:
- various food stuffs
- machinery and utensils for professional kitchens
- cooking methods
- customer service
- kitchen hygiene.
The key objective of this training is the student’s employment, which is why building a professional network through on-the-job learning plays an important role in the training. In addition to professional competence, the training also aims to develop the students’ abilities for independent work as well as working life skills.
Persons with a vocational qualification unit in restaurant and catering services can work for example in kitchen and customer service positions in restaurants and catering companies. After completing a vocational qualification unit it is possible to later continue the studies to complete the entire qualification in restaurant and catering.
For whom?
This training is targeted at unemployed jobseekers and persons who are under risk of being unemployed and are customers of regional employment services and meet the following requirements:
- Strong motivation for professional kitchen work
- Interest in working in service industry
- Suitable health for professional kitchen work
- Good written and oral English
- Basic Finnish language skills (must be at least level A2.2): Your understanding of familiar subjects is reasonably good. You can write in simple language.
The training presents an opportunity to complete individual qualification units
During the training, you can complete individual qualification units, such as:
- Preparing lunch dishes
- Working in catering services
Persons with a vocational qualification unit in restaurant and catering can work in kitchen and customer service positions in various food service companies.
After completing a vocational qualification unit, you can later complete the entire qualification in restaurant and catering.
In practice
Content of the training
The student’s goal is to complete one or two of the following qualification units: Working in catering services and/or Preparing lunch dishes.
Working in catering services, 20 cp
- Maintenance of customer- and working areas
- Preparing dishes and special diets
- Customer service and cashiering
- Maintenance of dishes and cleanliness
- In-house control of working methods
Preparing lunch dishes, 40 cp
- Knowledge of foodstuffs
- Nutrition and special diets
- Preparing dishes
- Recipe programmes
- Maintenance of dishes and cleanliness
- In-house control of working methods
- Maintaining work ability
- Digital skills
A personal competence development plan (PCDP) is drawn up for each student, taking into account the student’s previous education and work experience. The student will also complete the hygiene passport during the training.
Practical implementation
Training period: 22.4.2025 – 19.12.2025
Holiday period: 30.6.2025 – 27.7.2025
Teaching language of this training is English. The training consists of contact teaching, supervised self-study, e-learning and learning in working life. Contact teaching takes place on weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm at Careeria’s Helsinki office (Lämmittäjänkatu 2 A, 00880 Helsinki).
About half of the training consists of practical learning in the workplace. The practical learning period observes the working hours of the workplace.
Application and selection process
Fill out an electronic application by 21.3.2025. If you fill out an electronic application without strong authentication (online banking codes, a mobile certificate, or a smart ID card), you must confirm your application at regional employment services before the end of the application period. If you cannot use the electronic application, you can submit a paper application at any office of regional employment services (paper application form: www.suomi.fi; search word: TEM601; training number: 725048).
Representatives from Helsinki Employment Services and Careeria make a pre-selection for the training based on the applications.
In the application, it is important to highlight your suitability and motivation for restaurant / catering work. You must also list your work experience and previous trainings / degrees in the application.
After the pre-selection, some of the applicants will be invited for an interview. The interviews will take place at Careeria’s Helsinki office (Lämmittäjänkatu 2 A, 00880 Helsinki) on 3.-4.2025. The interviewed applicants must also participate in a Finnish language test at Careeria on 8.4.2025.
Please note that the training application is binding and cannot be withdrawn without a valid reason. By submitting an application to this training, you agree to participate in the selection process and to take part in the training if you are selected for it. If you cancel the application, do not participate in the selection process, or do not start the training, the TE Office/local government pilot on employment will review your entitlement to unemployment benefit (TTL 2 a luku 9 § 7 a-7 b sekä 2 a luku 10 §).
