Interested in the restaurant and catering industry? Seize the opportunity! 

A chef is a craftsperson in a creative field. In addition to cooking, experiments require an artistic eye, cleaning and hygiene skills, as well as skills in prefabricating, designing and innovating raw materials.  

A chef needs diverse knowledge. For example, by selecting raw materials, reducing waste and sorting waste, chefs can influence climate-responsible kitchen operations.  

There are many different locations in the industry, where chefs and kitchen workers need diverse information. The training focuses on, among other things: 

  • various food stuffs 
  • machinery and utensils for professional kitchens
  • cooking methods  
  • customer service  
  • kitchen hygiene.  

This will prepare you to work in various professional kitchens and restaurants. 

The key objective of the education is the student’s employment, which is why building a working life network through learning in the actual working life plays an important role. In addition to professional competence, an important goal of the education is to develop the students’ abilities for independent work and increased working life skills. 

 

For whom? 

The training is aimed at people who are interested in working in a restaurant or catering company and who are suitable for the field.  

If you are interested in the field and have sufficient Finnish language skills, are capable of physical and independent work, get along with a wide range of people, are happy and energetic, apply for training! 

The level of Finnish language proficiency required is A2.2.

The training presents an opportunity to complete individual qualification units 

During the training, you can complete individual qualification units, such as: 

  • Preparing lunch dishes 
  • Preparing plated dishes 
  • Climate responsible operations 

Persons with a vocational qualification unit in restaurant and catering can work in kitchen and customer service positions in various food service companies.  

After completing a vocational qualification unit, you can later complete the entire qualification in restaurant and catering.  

In practice

Training time

4.3.2025 – 1.11.2025

Training takes place on weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm.  

The training has a holiday period: 

30.6.2025 – 27.7.2025

Practical implementation

The education consists of contact teaching, supervised self-study, e-learning and learning in working life.  

About half of the training consists of working life learning in companies in the sector. During learning in working life, it is possible to complete competence demonstrations of units of the basic vocational qualification in restaurant and catering. The working life period observes the working hours of the workplace.  

A personal competence development plan (PCDP) is drawn up for each student, taking into account the student’s previous education and work experience. Based on the PCDP plans for the teaching to be completed at the educational institution, practical learning at the workplace and for the competence demonstration(s) will be drawn up.

Contact teaching takes place at Careeria’s Vantaa office, Virnatie 5 A, 01300 Vantaa.  

Content of the training

The student’s goal is to complete two of the following qualification units: Preparing lunch dishes, Preparing plated dishes or Climate responsible operations. 

Preparing lunch dishes, 40 cp 

  • Knowledge of foodstuffs 
  • Nutrition and special diets 
  • Preparing dishes 
  • Recipe programmes 
  • Maintenance of dishes and cleanliness 
  • In-house control of working methods 
  • Maintaining work ability 
  • Digital skills 

Preparing plated dishes, 25 cp 

  • Portion food preparation 
  • Portion presentation 
  • Special diets 
  • In-house control of working methods 

Climate responsible operations, 25 cp 

  • Opportunities to influence climate change in the work of a chef

The hygiene passport will be completed during training. 

Benefits during training

During the training, you may be paid the same unemployment benefit (earnings-related unemployment allowance/basic unemployment allowance/labour market subsidy) to which you are entitled if you are unemployed. If you are not unemployed or under threat of unemployment (laid off or working part-time), find out in advance what benefit you are entitled to receive during the training.
